This 1/2-day trek by bicycle and kayak to little-known and rarely seen natural areas will give you a profound perspective and appreciation for the unique mangrove-and-coral island natural habitat that is inextricably intertwined with the nearshore marine ecosystem of the Florida Keys. The natural and geological landscape has more in common with the islands of the Bahamas than anywhere on the U.S. mainland. After picking up groceries and drinks at a local shopping center in Key West, we will drive twenty minutes east to the westernmost point of Sugarloaf Key where there is a little-known bicycle trail that winds three miles through a protected wildlife and conservation area. At the turn-around, we will stop at a hidden swimming hole sheltered in the shade of surrounding mangrove trees. It's a three-mile return bike ride back to the trail-head, and then lunch at a serene picnic area on the ocean. After lunch we will put the kayaks in for an exhilirating expedition through untouched lush mangrove channels flowing between sea and sound.

For 35 years I have been connecting travelers and visitors with the natural wonders and unique character of place. I have led sightseeing tours in Miami Florida, archaeological trips to Mexico, geological expeditions in California, and sailing adventures to Cuba. As a kayaker, sailor, scuba-diver and long-distance swimmer I have explored the nearshore and outer islands of the Florida Keys extensively, and I am intimately familiar with the natural mangrove habitat of the islands that are inextricably intertwined with the coral and marine ecosystem. I have lived in the Florida Keys for twenty-three years, and I have hosted more than a thousand guests on my Airbnb Keys houseboat listing.

No one else had booked the same time, so I got a personal tour with Mike! I learned a lot about the Keys and the environment & habitats that make up the surrounding areas. Between the kayaking within the mangroves and the bike ride around the old abandoned highway, this was a great way to be active in the first half the day. I certainly left with a much deeper appreciation for the Keys and respect for the wildlife that we co-exist with. If you are like me and enjoy doing outdoor activities, I highly recommend this experience with Mike as it's a fantastic way to see the natural side of the Keys up close.

Mike B went out of his way to make our day special. The experience and the places he shared with us were unparalleled and mostly private. He had maps and charts and birds and plants lists to help us connect with nature and to more fully appreciate the multiple keys eco systems. He has just enough equipment for me to enjoy the perfect day outdoors. Binoculars, bikes, snorkel gear, and kayaks to get up close to some of the wildlife and mangroves. If you interactive outdoors experience, you will love learning more about the keys eco system with Mike.

We highly recommend Mike’s kayak and bike tour, as it is relaxing and never rushed. We were able to see so many birds and fish while kayaking in a serene area and the bike ride felt like a private tour. Mike is a lovely host!

I would like to start by telling you all that if you book any other nature adventure with anyone else after reading this you are a fool. I have travelled the keys numerous times, dived around the globe, I’ve even been whale watching in Hawaii, and nothing comes close to the day I had with Mike. The whole day felt spontaneous, from start to finish it was just like a couple of friends out for the day. YOU WILL NOT FIND A BETTER OR CHEAPER GUIDE! The whole experience is tailored to the individual so don’t worry if you’re out off by a lot of exercise, you can always sit things out! If there was a 10 star option this would receive it! Nothing can compare to being sat in a kayak intwined within the mangroves disconnected from the outside world watching nurse sharks, rays, turtles and jellyfish pass by. Mike really knows his stuff and he’s even produced his own guide on marine life and the geography of the keys to help you understand the importance of the ecosystems that thrive within it. This is a man who doesn’t care about your money, he simply cares about the nature around you and cares about you having the best possible time! He even gets stuck in with the action parts if you don’t feel so confident (jumping off high objects into water). Seriously, he’s nailed this trip itinerary, the worst part about it is having to come back to reality when you’ve finished, but believe me, it will change your life or at least your outlook of it! Happy exploring!

This was NOT what I expected and this is a good thing! Mike met with us, very laid back and explained everything we needed to know from equipment to snacks/hydration. We recieved a very informative summary of what our day was going to be. Mike showed us maps, gave us historical information and prepared us with the knowledge of the vegetation and ecosystems we would encounter. We traveled to what seemed like an untouched area of the key's and it was AWESOME. We biked on the old US-1 highway with no fear of vehicular traffic then had a quick bite to eat at the ocean with a beautiful view. Once done, we loaded kayaks into the water for our next adventure. Mike had the knowledge to know when the tides were right in order to uphold safety. We saw wildlife at it's best and learned the difference between the 3 types of mangroves. Definitely something you don't learn living in Michigan! It was a beautiful day! I had no idea what we were "getting into" but Mike went above and beyond the basic bike and kayak tour. My hope is to visit the keys again and book this trek. Highly recommended to my friends already, and now recommend to any others looking for a unique experience. If you are a nature lover or know someonewho is, BOOK THIS TRIP. Totally worth it!

My Husband and I took a short vacation to key west and we’re so glad that we were able to include Mike’s Nature trek by bike and kayak to our itinerary!! We had a fantastic time biking on nature trails fall off the beaten path, surrounded by the ocean and beautiful nature of the keys. In addition to the amazing views we saw many crabs, intresting birds and a deer. We then took the kayaks and explored the mangrove areas around the island with the beautiful open sea background. Mike was quite knowledgeable about the different ecosystems of the keys and the unique animals and plants. He struck a good balance of sharing informative and interesting information while allowing time for us to enjoy the experience together. We are tremendously grateful to Mike for being so flexible and accommodating last minute changes in our schedule.
