Here in the Burren, the bare exposed limestone which is up to 780 metres in thickness, covers an area of 250 square kilometres. Great slabs of rock are almost as flat and undisturbed as they were when they were formed in the warm shallow seas of the Carboniferous ocean 340 million years ago. The Burren does not mean barren; people have settled here since Stone Age times. Evidence of their habitations and tombs are all around you. The unusual flora of the Burren has attracted huge interest and attention over the years. Rare and spectacular plants grow in abundance throughout this unique limestone region. Unusual butterflies and moths feed on the flora and the hazel scrub. Pine forests give cover to the larger animals including Pine Marten.

Red Stonecutters Cottage is perched atop stunning Doonagore, a short drive from Doolin village. From this high point, you'll enjoy views of the Atlantic Ocean, Aran Islands and the Burren. The cottage is a great base to enjoy the music in the Doolin pubs, beach in Lahinch and the harbour village of Liscannor. The cottage dates back to after the famine and has been restored to preserve the original character, complemented by carefully selected period pieces to maintain its authentic charm.

The Cuckoo's Nest is a newly renovated cottage located just a two minute walk to the famous O'Connor's Pub, which has traditional music every night in the main tourist season and every weekend outside of this time. You can enjoy a delicious meal and a pint in one of the many great pubs or restaurants in the area, or you can shop in one of the local farmer's markets and cook up a storm in the chalet.
